Surprise! It’s human!

Lava Lamp Baby

On Monday Viola and I finally went in to the doctor to find out what was growing inside her belly. And yes, as we had hoped, it turned out to be a human fetus. I mean, sure the doctor can do blood tests and tell you she’s pregnant, and her waist can start growing, and new hormones can start kicking in, but until you see those little lava lamp blobs on the ultrasound monitor coalesce into a humanoid form, you’re not quite sure what you’re getting. Monday was the first day we got to take a look at it and make sure it was what we had signed up for. Yes, it’s a baby, and yes, as you can see from the X-rated ultrasound above (which was the only print they gave us to take home, even though I had been hoping for something a little more family-friendly that I could show my grandmother, thank you very much, Doctor), it’s a boy.

It’s been our little secret for the last few months, until we could get a look at it and make sure that it was growing normally and there wasn’t anything wrong with it. Until now, the only people who knew were our family and close friends (her close friends — my close firends found out about ten minutes before I wrote this), and every waitress and checkout girl my mother-in-law met. But now that we can see that it has a head and feet and a beating heart, it’s okay to tell everyone else. Which, if you don’t count everyone my mother-in-law “let it slip” to, comes to about four people.

It’s our first, and it wasn’t planned, so we’re both pretty much scared as hell right now. But, we have been raising our neice since age two, so at least we have a little experience with a used model. But we’ve never been given the keys to one straight from the factory, and we’re not sure how to break it in. Raising animals? Sure. We can do that in a snap. This? A little different.

September 22 is the due date. Part of me just wants it to come, fast, and part of me hopes it’s going to be a really long summer.

My advice is to water regularly. And don't entrust that to the neighbors. They just plain won't do it half the time.
