MIT’s OpenCourseWare project is nearing its official launch. This site, which has been live in a test version for the last year, promises to eventually offer the course syllabus, schedule, course notes, and other material from every one of MIT’s courses. Clay Shirky, in his latest essay, argues why he thinks the very concept of micropayments is doomed.

People want to believe in things like micropayments because without a magic bullet to believe in, they would be left with the uncomfortable conclusion that what seems to be happening — free content is growing in both amount and quality — is what’s actually happening.
