Saturday Mélange

Just a few fun little things I came across while island hopping on the internet.

50 Greatest Covers

Brian from Coverville mentioned this article in the Telegraph about the 50 greatest song covers of all time. Of course it doesn’t have my all-time favorites, like Weird Al’s Bohemian Polka. But still a comprehensive list.

RC Aerial Photography

This must be another area where I’m out of touch and late to the game. The first I heard about hobbyists strapping digital cameras to their RC airplanes and taking photos from 500 feet was this Thanksgiving, when Bed Bath & Beyond had a plane on sale with a built-in camera. But apparently this has been going on for a while. This page has some of the most excellent shots, but go up a level to find tons more. Hat tip to Doc Searls for this one.

And along the same vein: Kite Aerial Photography.

New York Changing

This is eerily similar to a project I have going on that I’m going to unveil soon. Photographer Douglas Levere came across an (apparently) famous series of photographs by Berenice Abbott, called Changing New York. In the 1930s Bernice took over 300 pictures of New York City as part of a WPA project. In the 1990s Douglas saw these pictures and decided to retake the same picture from the same location, usually at the same time of day, and pair each one up with the original. The result shows how little, and how much, New York has changed over the past seventy years. His pictures have been collected into a book, but there are a few dozen up for viewing on the website too. Excellent idea, and almost identical to a project I started this summer, which I should be taking the wraps off of soon.

Stay tuned!
